Parents in Kolkata usually choose between CBSE, ICSE and WBBSE. Each one is a good board. The right choice depends on your child, your plans and your family situation, not on which board sounds more impressive.
What CBSE offers
CBSE is a national board, followed by schools across India and in some other countries.

What WBBSE offers
WBBSE is the West Bengal state board, and the majority of schools in the state follow it.

- School fees are usually lower than in private CBSE schools

WBBSE suits families staying in West Bengal, and students who are comfortable studying in Bengali.
Difficulty is not the real difference
Parents often ask which board is harder. That is the wrong question. The boards are different in approach, not in difficulty. CBSE tends to ask more application based questions. WBBSE tends to reward thorough coverage of the textbook. A student can score well in either, with the right preparation.
Language of instruction
This matters more than most parents expect. A child who thinks in Bengali and is suddenly put into an English medium CBSE school may struggle for a year or two, not because of ability but because of language. Consider what your child is comfortable with today.
Think about the switch, not just the board
If you are considering moving your child from one board to another, the timing matters a lot. A switch is manageable up to Class 8. From Class 9 onwards it becomes difficult, because the board syllabus for Class 10 has already begun.
If you do switch, plan for a tutor during the transition year. The gap is usually in one or two subjects, and it closes with focused help.

Here is the honest part. The board matters less than three other things: the quality of the school, the support the child gets at home, and the child’s own study habits. A motivated student in a good WBBSE school will do better than an unsupported student in a well known CBSE school.

- Are we likely to move out of West Bengal in the next few years?
- Is my child aiming at national entrance exams?
- Which language is my child most comfortable learning in?
- What is realistic for our family budget over the next ten years?
