Children who read regularly do better across every subject, not just English. Reading builds vocabulary, improves comprehension and trains the ability to sit with something for a long stretch. But a child forced to read rarely enjoys it, and a child who does not enjoy it will not keep going.
Let them choose the book
This is the part parents find hardest. If your child wants to read comics, sports magazines or the same adventure series for the fourth time, let them. The goal at the start is the habit, not the literary quality. Taste develops later, and it develops faster in children who are already reading.
Start with the right level
A book that is too hard kills the habit quickly. A good test: open a page and have your child read it. If they stumble on more than four or five words, the book is too advanced for now. Slightly easy is much better than slightly hard.
Read at a fixed time
Fifteen or twenty minutes before bed works well for most families. It is a calm time, screens are already off, and it becomes something the child looks forward to rather than another task.
Let them see you reading
Children copy what they see far more than what they are told. If reading is something the adults in the house do, it looks normal. If the adults are on their phones while telling the child to read, the message does not land.
Talk about the book, do not test it
Avoid turning every book into a comprehension exercise. Instead of “what happened in chapter three”, try “what do you think he should have done?” or “did you like the ending?” A conversation keeps it enjoyable. A test makes it schoolwork.
Keep books within reach
A small shelf in the child’s room, books on the table, something to read in the bag. Children read what is nearby. If books are stored away neatly in a cupboard, they stay there.
Visit a library or bookshop
Letting a child pick a book themselves creates ownership. Kolkata has plenty of options, from local libraries to bookshops with good children’s sections. Making it an outing once a month works better than buying books online without them.
Read in the language they are comfortable with
Bengali, English or Hindi, it does not matter. The skills that reading builds — concentration, comprehension, imagination — transfer across languages. A child who reads happily in Bengali will find English reading easier later.
Do not stop reading aloud too early
Many parents stop reading to children once the child can read alone. Continuing for a few more years helps, because you can read books slightly above their own reading level. This builds vocabulary and keeps the pleasure of stories alive.
Be patient
Some children take to reading immediately. Others take a year to find the book that changes their mind. Keep offering options without pressure, and stop making it about marks. The habit, once it forms, lasts a lifetime.
