Why Students Struggle with Physics and How to Fix It

Ask a group of students which subject worries them most, and Physics will win. What is interesting is that most of them understand the theory reasonably well. The trouble starts when they are given a numerical problem.

The real problem is translation

A Physics question describes a situation in words. The student has to convert that description into known quantities, unknown quantities and the right principle. That translation step is where most students get stuck, not the calculation itself.

Once a student can turn the words into a labelled diagram and a list of given values, most problems become straightforward.

Common reasons students struggle

Memorising formulas without meaning

A formula learned as a set of symbols cannot be applied to a new situation. A student who understands what each symbol represents can adapt. A student who memorised it cannot.

Skipping the diagram

Students try to solve mentally to save time. A quick diagram with the given values written on it solves half the problem before any calculation starts.

Weak Maths

Sometimes the Physics is fine and the Algebra is the problem. If a student cannot rearrange an equation confidently, every Physics problem becomes twice as hard.

Not practising enough varied problems

Solving twenty similar problems from one chapter builds false confidence. The exam mixes situations. Practice has to be mixed too.

A method that works

Teach one approach and use it on every problem until it becomes automatic:

  • Read the question twice, slowly
  • Draw a simple diagram of the situation
  • Write down what is given, with units
  • Write down what is asked
  • Decide which principle or law applies, and why
  • Write the formula, then substitute
  • Check whether the answer is a sensible size, and whether the unit is right

The last step catches a surprising number of errors.

Fix units early

A large share of lost marks in Physics comes from unit mistakes, not concept mistakes. Centimetres used where metres are needed, or grams where kilograms are expected. Make unit conversion the first thing written down, before any calculation.

Where a tutor helps

Physics is a subject where watching someone think out loud is far more useful than reading a solution. A tutor can demonstrate the reasoning: why this law and not that one, why this quantity is ignored here. That reasoning is invisible in a textbook solution, which only shows the finished steps.

Build up slowly

Start with problems that use one concept. Only after those feel comfortable move to problems that combine two. Students who jump straight to difficult mixed problems usually conclude that they are bad at Physics, when really they skipped a step.

The encouraging part

Physics improves faster than most subjects once the approach clicks. Students who were scoring poorly often jump significantly within a few months, because the problem was never ability. It was method.
