Maths is the subject parents worry about most. It is also the subject where the right tutor makes the fastest difference, because Maths builds in a straight line. Fix the base, and everything above it becomes easier.
First, find out where the problem really is
A student who is weak in Class 9 Maths is rarely weak in Class 9 Maths alone. The real gap is often two or three classes below. Before hiring anyone, look at their recent test papers and check what kind of mistakes appear:
- Concept mistakes, where the method itself is wrong
- Calculation mistakes, where the method is right but the answer is not
- Incomplete answers, where steps are skipped
- Blank questions, which usually means fear rather than ignorance
Share this with any tutor you speak to. A good one will want to see the papers.
Look for a tutor who teaches your child’s board
CBSE, ICSE and WBBSE Maths papers are structured differently. The chapters overlap, but the question style and marking scheme do not. A tutor who regularly teaches your child’s board already knows the pattern and can prepare accordingly.
Check how they explain, not what they know
Every Maths tutor knows the syllabus. The difference is in how they explain it. In the demo class, watch for these things:
- Do they explain why a method works, or only how to apply it?
- Do they make the student solve, or do they solve everything themselves?
- Do they stay patient when the student gets it wrong twice?
- Do they check understanding before moving on?
A tutor who solves every sum on the board while the student watches is not teaching Maths. Maths is learned by doing it.
Ask about practice
Maths needs regular practice, and a good tutor plans it. Ask how much homework they give, whether they check it, and whether they keep a record of repeated mistakes. A tutor who reviews last week’s errors at the start of each class is worth a lot.
Decide between home and online
Maths works well online for older students, because most work happens on paper and the screen is only for explanation. For younger children, home tuition is usually better, since they need someone physically watching their working.
Be realistic about timelines
If your child has gaps from earlier classes, the first month may feel slow. The tutor will be going back to fill those gaps rather than racing through the current syllabus. This is the right thing to do, even though it feels like nothing is happening.
Real improvement in Maths usually shows after two to three months of steady work.
Signs the tutor is working
Do not judge only by marks in the first term. Look for these instead: your child attempts every question in a test instead of leaving some blank, they show their steps clearly, and they can explain a method back to you. Those are the signs that the base is being rebuilt.
