One of the first questions parents ask is simple: how much should I pay for a home tutor? There is no single answer, because the fee depends on a few things. But once you understand what drives the price, it becomes much easier to judge whether a quote is reasonable.
What decides the fee
Five things affect almost every tuition fee in Kolkata.
1. The class
Primary classes cost the least. Fees rise steadily from Class 6, and Class 11 and 12 are the highest. This is simply because the syllabus gets harder and the tutor needs stronger subject knowledge.
2. The subject
General subjects for lower classes are cheaper. Specialised subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Accountancy and Computer Science cost more at higher levels, because fewer tutors can teach them well.
3. The tutor’s experience
A college student teaching Class 5 will charge far less than a school teacher with fifteen years of Class 12 experience. Both can be the right choice, depending on what your child needs.
4. The number of classes
Fees are usually monthly and based on classes per week. Three classes a week costs more than two. Always confirm how many classes the monthly fee covers.
5. Location and travel
If a tutor has to travel a long distance, the fee often reflects that. Tutors from your own neighbourhood are usually more affordable and more regular.
One to one versus group tuition
A one to one class costs more, but the student gets full attention. A small group of three or four students costs less per student. For a child who needs focused help, one to one is usually worth the extra cost. For a child who is doing fine and just needs revision support, a small group can work well.
Online tuition is often cheaper
Online classes remove travel time for the tutor, so the rate is often lower. It also opens up tutors from outside your immediate area. For theory subjects and doubt clearing, online works well. For young children who need supervision, home tuition is usually better.
Questions to ask before you agree
- How many classes per month does this fee include?
- How long is each class?
- What happens if a class is missed by the tutor or by us?
- Are extra classes before exams charged separately?
- When is the fee due each month?
Getting these answers in the first conversation prevents most disagreements later.
Cheapest is not always best value
A very low fee sometimes means an inexperienced tutor, or one who will leave as soon as a better offer comes. A very high fee does not guarantee results either. Look at the demo class and the tutor’s experience with your child’s board, then decide whether the fee makes sense for what you are getting.
A practical approach
Speak to two or three tutors before you decide. Compare what each one offers, not just the number they quote. Most parents find that the middle option, from a tutor their child connects with, gives the best result.
